Does the city sound different at dusk? Is darkness bringing softness to the sounds or the edges of the city become sharper? How does the soundscape drift as we walk ourselves into the streets at the hour of sunset?

In this walkshop, walking artist Alisa Oleva invites participants to go on a walk together, paying attention to the soundscape of the city as darkness descends. We will meet at Q-O2 to do some arrival scores and meet each other and then start the walk at 16:56, the exact time of the sunset, walking and listening as the lamp posts are switched on and the ears adjust to the night listening.

On the walk I will offer various walking and listening scores to explore the soundscape and pay attention together. There will be moments of writing, drawing, map making as well as some movement scores to explore how walking differently might also change how we listen. We will work collectively as a group, sometimes in pairs, sometimes in smaller groups, sometimes on our own.

You do not need to bring anything. Please dress for the weather and take what you need as we will go for the walk in any weather and will spend at least two hours outside. My use of the word ‘walking’ includes wheelchairs, sticks, mobility aids or any other ways of navigating the streets. Get in touch in case you have any specific access needs you want me to be aware of in advance and I will adjust the walk if needed (email maryia@q-o2.be).

Alisa Oleva is a walking artist based in London who works within the spaces and streets of the city, exploring the politics of public space, how the city moves us and how we move it, urban choreography and urban archaeology, traces and surfaces, borders and inventories, intervals and silences, passages and cracks. She creates one-to-one and collective performances, walking scores, personal and intimate encounters, gatherings, soft parkour sessions, walkshops, soundwalks, and audiowalks.
